Why do people think roadable aircraft (half plane, half car) are unlikely in the near future?
What are the problems that make this an unlikely invention? I hear many people dismiss the Terrafugia (roadable aircraft).
Good question.
It is possible to create such vehicles, as we've seen, but it turns out that there are many disadvantages and downsides for these combinations -- as we've also seen. A few that come to mind:
- airplanes need to be lightweight; they therefore tend to be delicate in many ways, and in particular they are not very "crashworthy" on the ground.
- certified airplane parts, and maintenance by certified aviation maintenance personnel -- both of which are required by US aviation regulations, in most cases -- are hideously expensive. A fender bender in a roadable aircraft could be nightmarish in terms of expense. For example, a recent hangar collapse in my town damaged just the horizontal stabilizer of a Piper Tomahawk aircraft, but the aircraft had to be "totaled" due to the expense of replacement.
- Being able to fly in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC, such as clouds) is pretty much a requirement if you want an airplane to be a useful form of transportation. But flight in IMC, under "instrument flight rules" (IFR) requires a great deal of knowledge, training, and recurrent practice. Many instrument rated pilots I know have difficulty maintaining that currency; the vast majority of drivers I know would be unable or unwilling to do so.
- Roadable aircraft are likely to be very, very load-limited compared to a car. Many people would be disappointed by how much their roadable aircraft could actually carry, compared to a regular car.
- The avionics (navigation and radio gear) required for safe flight in busy airspace is extremely expensive. It would be very, very difficult to produce and sell a new IFR-capable aircraft (much less a roadable aircraft) for less than $100,000; most cost much more than that.
Accordingly, to date roadable aircraft have tended to be interesting toys, without any real practical application. There are a lot of technical problems to be solved before they become viable, in my opinion.
