+/- transmission in an '02 sonata...?
ok, so i just got an '02 hyundai sonata - it has some things that i don't understand (i'm going from over 10 years of 4x4 monster trucks & mud bogging jeeps, to this little car...)
so the gear shifter is next to my right thigh - it has the basic gears (P-R-N-D) going down next to the gear shifter... right? like any automatic gear-shifter...
but next to the "D" for drive, there's a little notch to the right - then the shifter can go either up (it has a + plus-sign) or down (which has a - minus-sign)
MY QUESTION:
what does the little + and the little - mean??
i have NEVER come across that... there isn't a P-R-N-D-1-2 like normal transmissions have... the 1 & the 2 are gone/missing/not created in this car...
but instead.. that little notch to the right and the +/-
awesome bryan! thank you!
a common name is auto-stick..its like a manual, but in an auto. The + puts the gears up the - puts them down. so for example from a dead stop you are in 1st, you move forward the tach goes up, you push the shifter towards the + its goes to 2nd, push it up again now you're in 3rd. If you want to go back to 2nd push towards the -. get the point. Now this also comes with safety feature , usually, it will automatically shift up if you neglect to do it. The computer will sense the RPM's getting too high and shift it for you.
