Breather Filter
why is oil getting into the air filter breather box on my 2000 mystery mystique?

Here's how it's supposed to work. Any gasoline powered engine has combustion leakage past the piston rings. These gasses need to be drawn out. Older cars used to simply dump them into the atmosphere. On modern vehicles (about 45 years now), the suction of the Intake Manifold draws them out of the crankcase, through the PCV Valve or metered orifice, and they are burned with the gas and air that the engine draws in. Either way, new fresh clean air has to take it's place. So there's a tube that attaches to another part of the engine, usually a valve cover, and that goes to the air cleaner housing. Fresh air is filtered by it's own filter, or it is drawn from the filtered side of the regular air filter.

If either the PCV valve or metered orifice is plugged, or it's hose is collapsed, these gasses build up, and the pressure makes it go out the hose that fresh air is supposed to be coming in from. The oil you are seeing on your air filter, whether you have a special filter for the crankcase ventilation or not, is from the oil vapor that is carried by these gasses. I suggest you find the problem and fix it, or find someone who can, and have the oil changed immediately afterward, as it is very damaging to your engine. These gasses are one of the main reasons that oil needs to be changed as often as it does, and having them build up like this is very harmful to the long term health of your engine.
