How does chromium protect steel from corrosion?
After the 1930s, chromium replaced nickel for corrosion resistance and appearance on car bumpers and trim...these old bumpers are still just as shiny as ever...how does the chromium protect the steel from corrosion?
The chromium is electroplated to the base steel. Chromium doesn't oxidize anywhere as easily as steel and is much harder and with a higher boiling point than iron.
Chromium is passivated by oxygen, forming a thin protective oxide surface layer. Passivation is the process of making a material "passive" in relation to another material prior to using the materials together. This layer is a structure only a few atoms thick and is very dense, preventing diffusion of oxygen into the underlying material. (In iron or plain carbon steels the oxygen migrates into the underlying material, causing rust.)
