Help with electric dry cleaner repair: only works when we spin the drum first?
i think there is a problem with the electric starter, as it works most of the time if we give the drum a spin first (as if kick starting the motor) but does not work at all if you just push the start button...how would i go about fixing the problem?
(the model is a hoover 5040ED if that helps)
oh and when i push the start button it makes a humming noise but the drum does not turn. ive opened it up and the belt + everything else i can see looks fine..
Your machine most likely has a split-phase induction motor. It has 2 windings and a centrifugal switch (which is usually an integral part of the motor). Sometimes, there is a starting capacitor as well. One winding is the run winding, the other is the start winding and is in series with the start switch. The switch is only "on" if the motor is stopped or spinning below about 3/4 of full speed, at which point, it shuts off (once the motor is spinning, it doesn't need the start winding any more). When you spin the drum you get the motor turning enough for it to start. The symptoms you describe; humming and not turning unless you give it an initial "kick-start" are pretty consistant with a start winding problem.
You need to check the start winding for continuity or shorts, the centifugal switch, and any related connecting wires for continuity (both these tests are done with the with power disconnected). The start winding curcuit takes quite a bit of current and sometimes you find the wires or connections burnt right off. A lot of appliance motors you can't even take them apart, they are just "throw-aways" If you can get to the problem, sometimes it is repairable. If you don't want to spend the money for a new motor, sometimes, you can scavange a motor out of another, similar, junked unit that will fit.
