Common engine for the Mopar B-body police cars?
What was the common engine the police used for their 1971-78 Mopar B-body cars (Plymouth Satellite/Fury and Dodge Coronet/Monaco)? I see alot of those police cars on the older movies back in the 1970s/early 1980s.
As the other respondents said, the 440HP was the maximum performance engine in those year's police cars. It was most easily distinguished by the dual exhaust, which you can see on the rollovers. The other engines were all modified for heavy duty police use, but only the 440HP had dual exhaust from 1975 through 1978. Since most police cars were, and are, used for urban/suburban use, the fuel economy was/is more important than maximum performance. Therefore the 360 was the most commonly used engine in those days. Police agencies that mainly patrolled the highways tended to order the 440HP. I assume the police cars used in chases in the the movies were chosen more by what was available to the production company than what engine was in the cars.
