What was causing the flame that was shooting out the side of the left main engine on the Space Shuttle?

Watching the video of the early morning landing of the space shuttle, I noticed what looked like a flame shooting out of the left engine cowling. The newsman said it was just a heat vent, but why would a heat vent be producing a flame? If it was just putting out heat, the most you might see is a ripple of the air, not an actual flame. I never seen this before. Any ideas?

The flames were coming from the APU exhaust ducts, not a 'heat vent'. The temperature of the exhaust gases at the duct is about 1,000F and every so often, the gases look like flames. Very rarely, they are visible during day landings but usually the flames aren't visible, even in night landings. However, they can always be seen with the infrared camera. Like the NASA guy said, it isn't a real problem so nobody makes a big deal about them.

There are three APU exhaust ducts located at the base of the tail, two on one side and one on the other (I forgot how many were on each side). You'll see flames on both sides of the tail and they were a few feet long.

There are also three steam ducts located at the base of the tail. These vent steam from the Water Spray Boiler (WSB), which cools the vehicle's hydraulic fluid. These could properly be called 'heat vents' but they really are steam vents. They don't produce flame, but in orbit, the steam condenses on the vent to produce huge ice cones. Water does some very odd things happen in zero g.

Irrespective of the fact whether you use it for play or for work, you can always accessorize your pickup truck to make it perform as well as look better. All the brand outlets of GMC, Dodge, Chevy, Mazda, Nissan, Ford etc sell accessories for their products but if you need a more expansive choice of accessories and plan to get a better bargain, then you should perhaps visit merchant websites that sell pickup truck accessories.

Apart from the brands of the trucks themselves, Dee Zee, Vector, Wolo, Thule, Saddleman, Grizzly, Protecta, Pilot, Hoppy and many other popular companies are also out there in the market who sell good pickup truck accessories. When planning to enhance and modify your truck from the outside, you have the choice of installing air dams, splash guards, wiper cowls, roll pans, grille guards, hood ornaments, truck steps, tire covers, wings, visors, emblems, decals and so much more.

However, if your modification purpose is oriented towards the interior beauty and comfort of your pickup truck, then try any of these: cargo trays, liners, 12 volt accessories, consoles, dash covers, floor mats, panel covers, seat and steering wheel covers, cruise controls, GPS systems, GMRS radio, inverters, security systems, radar, laser detectors, stereo music system, satellite radios and even more! Not all the accessories are required for everybody but all of them are fun and enjoyable to the fullest.

After mentioning all the fancy accessories, now let me mention some of the more useful accessories that will aid you in your effort as a pickup truck driver. Tonneau covers, cargo control, hitch balls, hitch covers, hitch mount, hitch wiring, tow hooks, winches, vent visor, visor, wheel well trim, window covers, windshield wiper, wiper cowls and related accessories. Add a few o these to make a journey which will be much easier and safer: bars, arms, shackles, lowering kits, lifting kits, shocks, struts, trusses, springs, skid plates, hubs. Choose some these accessories and you will only be making your ride safer and your job easier.

You can actually add a variety of lights to your pickup truck to make it look so much better, not to mention make your truck safer. Fog lights, accent lighting, auxiliary lighting, interior lights, light bars, light covers and guards, marker lights, neon lights, spot lights, tow lights, warning lights and much more lighting options are available if you are looking for them.

If you have starting problems, then you should keep battery chargers, jump start systems and chassis wiring, but if you are experiencing exhaust problems, then try installing catalytic converters, exhaust tips and extensions, mufflers and headers among a lot of others. Even if you have a perfectly accessorized pick up truck, it won't be of much use if the basic functioning is not at its best, so install any or most of these if you need to.

Buy your set of accessories and get them installed but choose them well depending on three things, your needs, your wishes and your budget.
