Whats the importance of police equipment?
Doing a 1000 word essay on the importance of police equipment, and I cant think of anything but the basic stuff. Like if anyone can, I need to know what are the importance of handcuffs and handguns. Like besides for protection and restraints... please if anyone can, give detail... please and thanks in advance.
Handcuffs-mechanical force option. Restrain criminals for the protection of officers and citizens. At police Academy, I was taught the seventh deadly error is not watching the hands. A person's hands are the only thing he can kill you with. Ex: to use a gun, he has to pull trigger with finger. To stab you with knife, he must do it with his hands, etc. With a suspect cuffed, he is STILL a threat, but is much less dangerous.
-cuffs can also be used to detain everyone, say at a bar brawl. They are not under arrest but you are trying to determine who started the fight, any weapons around,etc. They are very useful to protect cops during their investigation.
Gun-deadly force option. There are five levels of force and deadly force is the fifth and final one. If a cop points a gun at someone he is NOT using deadly force, but instead constructive force. He is trying to gain compliance by pointing the gun at the suspect. Used to save life of cop or third party. LEO cannot use deadly force to prevent property damage. LEO cannot fire warning shots to scare someone.(illegal at least where i live-NJ) If a deer has been hit by a car and is in critical condition on the side of the road, an LEO can shoot and kill the deer. Is not to be used as a blunt force instrument unless as a last resort. Also, people are more intimidated and scared to commit crimes when they see a cop with a gun. If he didn't have a gun, criminals would be more inclined to commit a crime. His 'officer's presence' serves to deter crime, and I think a big part of that is cops carry guns.
MEB- Mechanical force option Baton is used for blunt force. Pain compliance. Suspect is not obeying your commands or begins to fight you, you can strike them to gain compliance.
OC Spray-Mechanical force option-Used to gain compliance. Stings like a MOFO. Takes a suspect's eyes away because it stings so badly. It then makes it very difficult for a suspect to punch, shoot, or stab you if he cannot see.
