It might be a good idea for a disabled person’s car, but otherwise why replacing something so simple and failure proof as the hinge with a complicate and heavy mechanism, control electronics and such. I bet the door in the 1897 benz still working whereas the “magic door” would last, say, 5 years at best?

So what happens of the battery dies, the fuse gets blown, the motor burns out, or things get out of alignment? As far as I can tell there’s really no manual override for that thing. And any damage would be expensive to repair.
