anyone know what shift knobs would be interchangable with a stock 70 vw shifter? whats the thread pitch/size?

ok, so i have a 1970 vw bug and wanted to put an aftermarket shift knob on my stock shifter, what knobs would be interchangable with it? like can i take a shift knob from a say.. .. toyota (celica, scion, yaris, echo, corolla), mitsubishi (evo, eclipse, 3000gt), mazda(rx7,rx8), honda(civic, crx, integra, rsx), nissan (sentra, 350z). Any help would be great, thanks. i can't seem to find info on the comparison of thread pitch from the bug shift knob and other cars. Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

If you know how to figure out thread sizes dont waste your time reading this.........................................................
i cant tell you teh answer to your question but i can tell you how to figure it out. Im a machinist i make threads and tap parts all the time
get you a thread chart if you dont hav eone already(try and download one online)
try - http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/metric-threads-d_777.html
get you a cheap pair of vernier calipers from sears.
this is going to be used to measure the ID of teh shifter ball
or you can use it to measure the (O)utside(D)iameter of teh shaft that teh knob screws on.when doind so measure teh diameter where the threads are not the unthreaded part of teh shaft,(common mistake made to newbees)

and buy a Thread Pitch Guage. my first guess is that the thread is going to be metric being that it is a european car. so get a metric thread guage also found at some place like sears or where ever you can buy precision tools.
this thread(pitch) guage will help determine teh pitch this is a series of blades with diff thread profiles you try and fit into the grooves of teh unknown thread. once you find one that fits read teh sid eof it and that will be your pitch

the pitch ona standard american thread is how many threads are in one inch
a metric thread is how far it is from crest of one thread to the adjacent thread crest or (top of thread, point)put it all together and you got your answer.

hope that wasnt too much info.hope that helps
peace.
