BMW emblem?
My dick of an ex bf scratched off my hood emblem. I bought a new one and called the dealer to see what i should do. The dealer told me that the emblem should just pop off, I've tried but it won't come off. I dont want to scratch the paint. What can I do?? oh and the dealer wanted to charge me almost 100$ for them to do it.
BMW emblems are usually attached with either 2 rubber grommets, or self-adhesive tape...both can be removed using the "Dental Floss" method..using a length of ordinary dental-floss(about a foot or so), work the middle of the length into the top edge of the emblem...you want to slide it beneath the emblem edge..try to pull it underneath and towards middle of emblem..if you have a grommet-style emblem(as dealer seemed to indicate), this should be fairly easy...once you have the floss underneath and centered on the emblem, pull up on one side of it a bit, while holding the other end of the floss so it doesn't pass through..the emblem should start to move up..work the other side of the floss in the same manner until the emblem is clearly away from the body panel..the emblem should move about a quarter of an inch upward and then pop off...you'll see two black rubber grommets(they look like small eye-dropper squeeze bulbs)either remaining in the body panel or attached to the back of the emblem..they just pull out or off..retain for use with new emblem(to install:attach grommets to back two pins, press evenly into body panel; a small amount of lube, grease or oil applied to ends of grommets will ease install)...if you find the floss difficult to use , you could try using double the length and folding in half for better grip, and wearing thin leather gloves(floss can cut skin if not careful)...If your emblem is stuck on with self-adhesive tape, the floss still will remove it, but the method is somewhat different. Basically, you'll be using the floss to "saw" through the adhesive tape..Best to use waxed type dental floss for this situation..You use about 2 feet of waxed floss, working it under top edge of emblem as before..if it's adhesive, the floss won't pass under the emblem..You then work the floss back and forth under the emblem while pulling slightly downward. Be sure to keep the floss away from the painted surface..takes some effort but the floss will absolutely cut through the adhesive....the emblem will pop off once you're completely through the adhesive backing...Using a hair dryer to heat just the emblem may help speed up the process(specially if you're outside and the weather is chilly)...There will be some of the emblem adhesive left on the body panel. This can be removed with rubbing alcohol or more easily with "GOO-GONE", a citrusy product which absolutely won't harm your paint..Be sure not to use nail polish remover or abrasive material(ouch!)...Once the adhesive material is removed, clean up with a couple paper towels and rubbing alcohol to insure new emblem adheres well..All Done! ..dkane
