Bmw e36 wheels?
Hi i have a 1991 325 and i have seen a set of genuine 17" alpina wheels for sale that i quite like but the width worries me.They are 8" up front 9" rears some people tell me these will bolt on no probs and others say no way especially the rears,i dont want to do any mods to get them to fit,can anyone clear this up for me cos im thinking they wont fit.Also what is the widest i can go?Cheers
Are you sure you have an E36? I thought the E36 only came out in 1992. The E30 was the model that sold in 1991.
Anyway, I believe you should think about what other factors will be affected assuming you can fit these wheels/tires before you consider getting them.
Extra width means extra weight and friction. Which also means less available power to you... so while you may have fat tires, you will accelerate slower, burn more gas, and pay more for new tires more frequently: since you can't rotate the tires and they generally wear out quicker. Also, if you don't have the weight, having wider tires increases the chances of hydroplaning on wet roads.
I wouldn't recommend getting them. If you must get 17 wheels, that's fine, just don't get one that wide. The recommended tire size for your car at 17" is 205/45 R17. And that's at all 4 wheels.
Having 9" width at the back will most likely require your inner rear wheel arch rolled. Personally, I think the E30 will do great on 16" wheels; or, if you actually have an E36 325i, then 17" wheels at 225/45 R17 will be fine.
Alpina cars are normally heavily modified with increased engine power to require beefier tires and wheels. They will of course also have any required rear arch modifications to fit the wheels. If your car is stock, it's not a good idea to get these wheels just for aesthetic purposes. I'm saying "aesthetic" because functionally, they will do nothing to add to the BMW.
