Costume Armor Crafting?

I have a muscle suit that I would like to harden and redesign to make it more attractive and armor looking.

Keep in mind this is a very cheap attempt, I'm not looking for anything expensive or professional quality.

Basically I am looking to add at least one more layer to the suit. The main thing I need is something harder, like plastic or rubber. My idea was to cut out pieces of thin plastic sheets and sew them on with a final leather layer on top. What kinds of plastics are out there that are flexible and durable to keep it's shape. Is plastic the only way to go?

Are there any other sorts of materials for a finishing layer? Latex? Polyester? Something that has a small glare, but not metal looking, although that would be fine too.

The main image I want is kind of a modern armor, something like what The Batman wears in his movies.

Would vinyl be OK? It's flexible, but stiffer than cloth, more like soft leather, depending on its thickness. You can get it in fabric stores.
