why does ice crack when you put it into a liquid?
when you place ice in a liquid like water, it becomes instantly clearer and it makes a cracking sound and you can even see cracks form when this happens. What causes this?
All the expansion explanations appear to be bunk to me. Water has a greater volume in its solid state verses it liquid state.
I think the cracking occurs because of the release encapsulated stresses when heat rapidly transfers out of the cube. The greater the heat differential (ie hot vs cold water the faster and more complete the stress release.
But I think the structure of the ice plays a role too. Normal atmospheric ice has two primary states Amphorous (non crystalline) and Ice 1h. (crystalline). I believe that upon deep cooling and time held below freezing ice gradually transforms from amphorus to crystalline.
Then when a very crystalline ice is warmed it quickly transforms from crystalline to amphorous (cracking) then melts into liquid water.
