How will metal halide lighting effect my power factor?
I have a distribution warehouse with 150 mercury vapour HID fixtures each 400Watts. These fixtures consume about 80% of the electricity at the facility.
Does metal halide lighting normally cause power factor to drop or stay closer to 100%?
Any lighting with ballasts, electronic or not, will produce a very low power factor. This will overload the feeder lines and you better have it checked to avoid nasty surprises later on.
Check the main feeder phase currents with an amprobe, and see if they are balanced and within their section rating. Then, do a quick power factor calculation by totaling the wattage of the fixtures and dividing it by 1.73 times the volt-amp product. If the pf is above .7 you should be ok.
