turn the light off. before cfls dimmer switches were used to conserve electricity. they work by turning the light on and off faster than the eye can see. 130 volt lamps last longer than 120 due to a thicker filament. by the way cfls are NOT green. they contain mercury which must be disposed of properly. manufactures clearly state that these products are not to be combined with household refuse. special recycling is required.
www.lutron.com. dimming an incandescent bulb 25% saves 20% energy. bulbs last 20 times longer when dimmed 50%.
the resistor used is the housing of dimmer. dimmer is 99% efficient. the other 1% is dissipated as heat.
