How is Stone Mountain an example of the rock cycle?
Stone Mountain is a monolith in the town of Stone Mountain, Georgia.
If you look at your rock cycle you can usually start with igneous rock being formed through volcanic activity. This is then either eroded into pieces that are compressed into sedimentary rock, or folded and deformed into metamorphic rock. At some point it will once again be subducted, melted and then reproduced as an igneous rock.
Stone mountain is a good example of what happens in the igneous phase when the magma cools without making it to the surface. The monolith cooled intrusively, and is now exposed. Mechanical and chemical weathering are now working on it, to eventually produce sedimentary rock. Depending on the size of the monolith, there may be an area that is deep enough, and seismically active, and is being deformed to produce a metamorphic rock.
