Hi, I'm doing the past exam for my physical chemistry subject and I came across this Q...
Q/ A solution was prepared by weighing 2.33g of a sample of poly(vinyl chloride) into cyclohexanone, so that the final volume was 250 mL. The osmotic pressure of the solution was measured to be 6.64 cm, measured as the height of the solution at 298K. Calculate the molecular weight of the polymer. The density of the solution was 0.960 g cm^-1.

I'm really stuck at how to use the osmotic pressure. I'm used to dealing with o.pressure in Pa and not cm. By subbing into pi = cRT, I ended up with a molecular weight with the unit g mol^-1 m^-4. How can I tackle this problem? Thanks
I presume that osmotic pressure is 6.64 cm Hg => 66.4 mm Hg
p = 66.4 / 760=0.0874 atm
0.0874 = CRT = C x 0.08206 x 298
C = 0.00357 mol/L
moles = 0.00357 x 0.250 L=0.000894
molar mass = 2.33 / 0.000894 =2.61 x 10^3 g/mol
