What dose Emily Dickinson mean in this poem?
what is the meaning on the surface and deeper meaning of this poem
Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.
We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For his civility.
We passed the school, where children strove
At recess, in the ring;
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.
Or rather, be passed us;
The dews grew quivering and chill,
For only gossamer my gown,
My tippet only tulle.
We paused before house that seemed
A swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The cornice but a mound.
Since then 'tis centuries, and yet each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses' heads
Were toward eternity.
Well, it's about death, obviously. The poet is speaking metaphorically, saying that while she was not ready to die, death came for her anyway. The children playing, the field of grain and the setting sun are all symbolic of life's journey, heading west which is where the Greeks believed one went after death.
The "house that seemed / a swelling of the ground" is a grave. Dickinson was often ill, and often preoccupied with death (My life closed twice before its close), and this COULD indicate a near death experience, or a dream, or possibly a premonition of her own death.
Try googling the first line of the poem, and see what you find. Very likely the first few hits will include one that can set the poem in the context of Dickinson's life for you.
